A pleasant 3km lakeshore and hillside loop in picturesque County Sligo, the delightful Slish Wood Forest Walk boasts exceptional views over Lough Gill and lush swathes of woodland.

Taking 1 hour to complete, this charming looped trail follows the southern shore of Lough Gill and lies in the shadow of majestic Killerry Mountain.

Following forest road and forest track all the way, walkers will enjoy excellent views of pictorial Lough Gill, its sprinkling of islands and the surrounding County Sligo countryside. This loop is strenuous in grade and ascends 25m overall.

Slish Wood is an ideal walk for people of all ages and is a particularly enjoyable day out for all the family. Keep your eyes peeled for the many 250-year-old Oak trees scattered along the trail. These woodlands also boast Norway and Sitka Spruce, Scots Pine, Grand Fir, Whitebeam, Birch and many more.

Nearby Sligo Town is the place to enjoy a spot of lunch or that much-deserved cup of coffee after this serene forest loop.

Why we like it

• The Slish Wood area is rich in flora and fauna, so much so that it’s recognised as a bio-diversity site and forms part of the Lough Gill Natural Heritage Area.

 • This loop overlaps with a section of The Sligo Way, a much longer walking trail (80km) that passes through Slish Wood.

• Just some of the wildlife you may spot on this trail include mute swan, duck and heron, blackbird, thrush, lark, badger, fox and fallow deer too.
