Green Wood Chairs, in Skibbereen, County Cork, offers you the opportunity to make bespoke sculptural chairs from locally coppiced hazel, grown in the surrounds of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Alison Ospina of Green Wood Chairs has been teaching chair making courses for over 25 years. The courses are aimed at all levels of experience, from seasoned woodworkers to those who have never sawed, sanded or hammered before.

Alison has written several books on the art and skill involved with chair making. From sheepskin footstools, rocking chairs with solid elm seats, to leather seated fireside chairs, Alison creates a wide range of furniture, including a diminutive chair for children. Courses can be 1 or 3 days of duration, and lunch, refreshments and all materials are included. All chairs are made from eco friendly coppiced hazel cut from woodlands near Kealkil and Skibbereen in County Cork.

Alison is happy to work to commission and often has a range of chairs, stools and small tables for sale from the Green Wood Chairs studio. The studio is not generally open to public except for courses, but visits are welcome if arranged in advance.

Why we like it
  • Keeping a long forgotten craft alive.
  • The satisfaction from hand crafting your own chair will live long in your memories.
  • The location lends itself to a calm and serene place to enjoy your learning experience.
Tips from locals

If you are partaking in one of the 3 day chair making courses and are staying nearby, plan to do some night kayaking on the nearby Lough Hyne, where you will experience the breathtakingly beautiful bioluminescence as you glide across the still night water.
