Visitors can find the historic site of Dún an Óir, or the Fort of Gold, on a rock promontory of Smerwick Harbour, which is north of Ballyferriter Village in County Kerry.
In 1580, during the Second Desmond Rebellion, the fort bore witness to a terrible massacre. A coalition of 600 Irish, Spanish and Italian soldiers were brutally killed after three days of battle with Lord Grey’s troops.
In 1980, a commemorative monument was erected.
