Bart from Belgium, and Cillian, from Ireland, were veterinarians for twenty five years before embarking on a plan to bring Belgian style brewing to the West of Ireland. The brewery was built by them from scratch in a converted timber farm building on Bart's farm.
From very small beginnings Mescan Brewery Ltd has expanded to its current capacity. Visitors can see the story of the brewery's evolution in the layout of buildings and tanks around the original brewery building.
Visitors will be shown around the brewery by one of the brewers who will explain the brewing process from raw ingredients to finished product. Part of the tour takes place outdoors, weather permitting.
Finger food is served during the tour and visitors are guided through the various Mescan beers with explanations of the style and flavour profiles. Questions are encouraged at all times.
Mescan beers are available in the vicinity so visitors will be recommended to visit local hostelries and test their beer knowledge.
Courses in all grain brewing and beer tasting/judging are run at the brewery from time to time.
