Just 3.5km north of Killala, County Mayo, you will find the ruins of 13th century Rathfran Abbey, overlooking the Cloonaghmore River.
Rathfran Dominican Abbey, or Priory, was founded in 1274 by William de Burgh and his wife, Finola d'Exeter. The abbey showcases some beautiful architecture of its time, including exquisite lancet windows, tomb niches and stone slabs used as head stones with intricate and elaborate Celtic carvings.
Today, many of the abbey's features are no more, including the cloisters, of which only the foundations are visible.
