Roscommon is perfect for a laid-back break thanks to its pristine rivers, lakes, hillsides and a profusion of historical attractions. Celtic mythology enthusiasts should visit the 60 or more standing stones, cairns and fortresses village of Tulsk. The most important Celtic royal site in Europe, legend says that Queen Maeve’s palace was once in the area. And nearby Oweynagat Cave is believed to be the entrance to the otherworld. The Cruachan Aí Visitor Centre explains all. Explore more recent history at Boyle Abbey; the Castlerea Railway Museum, with its collection of rail memorabilia; and 18th Century Strokestown House. Its Famine Museum, although tragic, is a must. At King House Interpretive Centre, kids can don ancient cloaks or write with a quill while the Arigna Mining Experience offers underground tours exploring Ireland’s first and last coal mine. No doubt fresh air will be a priority after that! So stretch those legs on a section of the Miner’s Way. It follows paths used by miners going to work. Other local trails include the Suck Valley Way and the Tain Way which is suitable for walking or cycling. Outdoor enthusiasts will also love the cruising and fishing for which Roscommon is famous. Lough Key Forest Park is another highlight. Don’t miss the tree-top canopy walk, the outdoor adventure playground and water skiing on the lake. And if you’re looking for something completely different, check out the O’Carolan International Harp Festival, Boyle Arts Festival or even Roscommon’s Viking Festival. Go on, set your inner warrior free!
