Along the shore of Ballysadare Bay, just west of Knocknarea and not far from Sligo Town, people can visit the Culleenamore Middens, which are the fascinating remains of prehistoric kitchen middens, or refuse sites.

Found near Sligo Town, just west of Knocknarea, Ballysadare Bay is home to the fascinating remains of prehistoric kitchen middens, or refuse heaps, where shells were deposited.

The marine life found around the Cuil Irra Peninsula served as an important source of food for the Mesolithic man and subsequent settlers. The area's remains are extensive, with some of the middens stretching 100m long.
