Explore Viking heritage and memorabilia in Waterford City, Ireland’s oldest city founded by the Vikings in 914AD. See the world famous Dragon Slayer Sword and a Viking longboat.

Visit the aptly names Viking Triangle in Waterford City centre. Explore cobbled streets in the heart of the city, where cafés and shops surround visitor attractions from the city's Viking, Norman and medieval past.

A replica Viking longboat with a red sail called the Vadrafjordr, the Viking name for Waterford, can be found next to the Viking Museum at Reginald’s Tower.

Another highlight close by is the Dragon Slayer Sword, listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Hand carved from a giant Douglas fir tree, this 23 metre long sword depicts the history of the Vikings in Waterford City, carved into panels on the sword.

Why we like it
  • View amazing craftmanship in the intricate carvings along the length of the sword, made from a single tree.
  • The Longboat reconstruction is testament to the bravery and tenacity of the Vikings who sailed across the sea in similar boats.
