When you walk through the doors of Gertie Brownes Bar & Bistro, you will immediately feel that you are very welcome. In the centre of Athlone Town, Gertie Brownes Bar & Bistro is just a two minute walk from the bank of the River Shannon.

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone who is familiar with the history of this establishment that, from as early as the 10th or 11th centuries, Gertie Browne's Bar & Bistro has been a hostelry of some sort.

The pub itself dates back over 1,000 years, initially acting as a resting point for those travelling west while also providing them with a place to house their horse drawn carriages for the night. Nowadays, you’ll more often than not find a mixture of Athlonians perched at the old world style bar enjoying a drink or a bite to eat in comfortable and familiar surroundings while exchanging some of the local gossip with the friendly staff behind the bar.

As you make your way through the deceptively long tavern, you’ll no doubt notice the curious tourists who have wandered in to study and admire the various bric-a-brac that decorates the walls from top to bottom as well as to try a pint of Guinness. Tongue and groove walls, antique pitch pine counters and genuine salvaged memorabilia all help give the emporium that relaxed and pleasant atmosphere they are known for. You’ll even find an open fire featured in the front bar during the colder months.

Also known to locals as the ideal location to meet for a hearty meal, the focus at Gertie Browne’s Bar & Bistro is on no nonsense, high quality food and drinks.

The team at Gertie Browne’s Bar & Bistro always do their best to ensure that each customer is welcomed and made feel at home with a good drink which is both properly presented and delicious. They offer a wide selection of beers which are available in bottles or on draught along with a variety of house wines. Their shelves are filled with a wide selection of both local and international spirits and customers can choose from an extensive list of 40+ gins and whiskeys. For those who are unsure of what to choose, the staff behind the bar are always happy to offer a word of advice.

The private library room, located in the back of the building, can accommodate up to 40 people, making Gertie Browne's Bar & Bistro the ideal location to host special occasions or gatherings of all shapes and sizes. They often cater for a variety of options for groups including birthday parties, day after wedding parties, christenings, as well as corporate events.
