Ran [40th Anniversary]
Cork City, Co. Cork
6 September 2025
Ran at Triskel Arts Centre, Cork, on 6 September. In 1985, Akira Kurosawa combined Shakespeare's 'King Lear' with Japanese history to create an epic that was both brutal and beautiful. Forty years later, the film has lost none of its power.

RAN (which translates as ‘turmoil’) is Akira Kurosawa’s profound exploration of Shakespeare’s King Lear intertwined with the historical backdrop of Japan’s 16th century Civil Wars and the legendary tale of Morikawa, a feudal warlord with three sons. Kurosawa’s final film was immediately recognised as a masterpiece upon its release and garnered numerous awards, including the Oscar for Best Costume Design and BAFTA awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Makeup.

“Akira Kurosawa's epic…has not dimmed one bit in the three decades since its first release.” The Irish Times
