Dunloe Castle was built by the Norman Fitzgeralds, Earls of Desmond, in 1215. This castle was an important strategic key in the defense of the Killarney area. It was used to command the passage across the river to the Gap of Dunloe. It stands in the park of the Dunloe Castle Hotel. There is some of the original castle present as the foundation for the present structure.
Dunloe Castle Gardens are set in an incomparable location with magnificent panoramic views of the towering MacGillycuddy Reeks. The gardens contain an exceptionally rich variety of trees and shrubs, including many species that are rarely if at all found elsewhere in Ireland.
