Republic of Ireland

Visitors can find the remains of Castle Rheban just 3km from Athy in County Kildare. The castle was built after the arrival of the Anglo-Normans, when the Irish social structures were changed and the barony of Rheban created. Richard de St Michael, lord of the barony, built the castle, but it changed ownership many times during the wars of 1641-50, and since then has been in ruins. The castle is thought to be the burial place of a king and was once attached to the site of an ancient moat.
